LITERACY advocate, author, and publisher Teri M Bethel of BooksByBethel.com has recently partnered with Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020, which features its winning stories in their annually published Butterfly StoryBook.

Now in its 10th year, the competition is organised by the E-Club but assisted by local chapters. Paul Amoury, Rotary Past President and chairperson of the Butterfly Storybook Competition, says he is amazed at the young writers’ level of creativity in their storytelling. This partnership between BooksByBethel.com and Rotary and facilitated by the Rotary Club of Eleuthera will showcase the writings of some of the outstanding contestants of their Butterfly StoryBook Competition. President of the Eleuthera Club,

Rotarian Glenda Johnson-Ingraham, welcomes the initiative and believes it is in keeping with their club’s Literacy Advocacy Program.

In partnering with the Rotary Club, Mrs Bethel hopes to celebrate young writers with the anticipation that they will continue to develop their reading, writing, and communication skills. She also hopes that this opportunity will encourage parents, students, and educators to support this and other writing initiatives.

“We see the need for literacy with the breakdown in communications in the home, school, and work — there is no part of society that is left out,” Mrs. Bethel stated, adding that much of the confusion stems from an inability to effectively share thoughts.

AUTHORS DONATE NEW BOOKS TO 17 LIBRARIES IN ELEUTHERA

Bahamian Authors Donate Books to Eleuthera Libraries

A growing list of more than 50 civic-minded Bahamian authors has come together to provide 17 public libraries in Eleuthera with new copies of their books. At the time of the presentation, more than 550 books were donated, with additional copies on the way. This whirlwind initiative was spearheaded by local author and publisher Mrs. Teri M. Bethel of BooksByBethel.com, a website that features Bahamian (& West Indian) authors (and residents of the Bahamas) who provide books with family-friendly reading content. The initiative, however, was not limited to their website’s authors. “We were delighted to come across many talented writers in the Bahamas who we did not know before this book drive,” Mrs. Bethel indicated. “While some had already made their books available to several of the libraries around the Bahamas, others embraced the opportunity to join the effort to build, inspire, and entertain the far-reaching communities in Eleuthera.” Mrs. Bethel further indicated that when authors or their families found out about what was being done, they immediately threw their hand in (so to speak) as an act of participating in nation-building.”

When asked about the inspiration behind the gesture, Mrs. Bethel noted that she had read a story in the Eleutheran Newspaper featuring a 6th-grade student from the Tarpum Bay Primary School. The little girl, De’Anntae Hepburn, had started a virtual reading club to encourage fellow students to read...
